Our blog

The use of dental floss, an essential part of maintaining dental health, is an effective way to clean residues and plaque between your teeth. However, the technique of using dental floss can be overlooked or done incorrectly by many. In this article, you will learn why using dental floss is important and the correct techniques.

Why is Dental Floss Important?

While brushing your teeth is a crucial part of cleaning them, the brush may not reach narrow areas between your teeth. Here’s where dental floss comes into play:

  • Cleans Between Teeth: Dental floss removes food residues and plaque between your teeth, helping prevent cavities and gum problems.
  • Supports Gum Health: Using dental floss below the gumline is a key way to maintain gum health, reducing inflammation and bleeding.
  • Prevents Bad Breath: One cause of bad breath is trapped food residues between teeth. Cleaning these residues with dental floss provides fresher breath.

Correct Dental Floss Usage Techniques:

  • Selecting the Right Dental Floss: There are various types of dental floss, such as thin or thick, waxed or unwaxed. Choose a dental floss that can easily fit between your teeth and that you find comfortable to use.
  • Adequate Length: Cut a piece of dental floss approximately 45 cm long. Stretch the floss between your fingers, leaving a gap of 2-3 cm.
  • Gently Sliding Between Teeth: Slowly slide the dental floss between your teeth without harming the gums. Wrap the floss around one tooth and clean with up-and-down motions.
  • Cleaning Each Tooth Individually: Clean each tooth one by one. You can continue using the same dental floss, but if it becomes dirty or torn, replace it with a new piece.
  • Rinsing Afterwards: Rinse your mouth thoroughly after using dental floss.

Using dental floss requires forming a habit. It may be challenging at first, but with regular practice, you can improve. Your dentist will be happy to teach you the correct techniques.
